    Advanced Seminar Medical Engineering

The Advanced Seminar Medical Engineering is a course format with a smaller amount of students and a lecturer, during which you will analyse and present a research topic of the field of (Medical) Engineering, discuss it with the other participants and document your results in the form of a written report (seminar achievement = presentation and written report). It is strongly recommended to take the seminar towards the end of your master’s studies (i.e. in your penultimate semester, when you have already acquired at least 60 ECTS). This ensures that have already passed some basic courses and possess the necessary qualifications to tackle the seminar tasks. As the seminar is a good entry point to finding a master’s thesis topic with the seminar lecturer, it is advisable to take the seminar in the last semester before you want to start your master’s thesis.

You can choose from a large selection of seminars each semester, which you can find in your seminar catalog  (see “General Study Information Master’s program” in the menu on the left; remember to choose the correct FPO version!). You may choose any seminar listed in the catalog without having to consult your professor or study advisor. Seminars marked with an orange background are taught in English. The module “Advanced Seminar Medical Engineering”/M4 in the Master’s program has a workload of 5 ECTS in total, hence you can either fulfil it by taking one 5 ECTS seminar or two 2,5 ECTS seminars.

IMPORTANT: Seminars require previous registration, which usually takes place a few weeks or months before the lecture period starts (i.e. March/April for the summer semester; August/September for the winter semester). As most of our lecturers define the registration period for their seminars individually, it is crucial that you inform yourself early on via Campo and StudOn when the registration for your desired seminar takes place. In case you cannot find any updated information in Campo or StudOn, please contact the responsible professor and ask them about the registration modalities. Exception: The registration for seminars offered by our Department for Electrical Engineering (abbreviation “EEI” in your seminar catalog) is managed via a registration system. You will be informed each year via email when this system opens.

The Advanced Seminar Medical Engineering of the Master degree program is a graded achievement.

If you want to attend a seminar not listed in the catalog, please check if you will receive 2.5 or 5 ECTS credits and a grade for completion and ask your lecturer if you may work on a Medical Engineering subject for the seminar. Afterwards, contact your study advisor. Only then you will receive a confirmation allowing you to incorporate the achievements of the seminar in your studies.

If you intend to work on an extensive seminar project (after consulting your lecturer) exceeding the required workload for the M4 module you can use the additional ECTS credits from this project for the module group Academic Laboratory, Flexible Budget Faculty of Engineering or Free Choice Uni. For this, your lecturer must issue a second certificate including the title of the seminar and the remark “Zusatzleistung” (additional achievement).

In order to have your achievements listed in Campo, you need to send the certificates to Mrs. Jahreis of our examinations office, who will enter your grade and credits manually.

Taking the same seminar module twice:

You are only allowed to take the same seminar twice (e.g. for “Free Choice Uni”/”Flexible Budget Faculty of Engineering”) after previous consultation with and the agreement of your lecturer. The decision whether the contents of the seminar are different enough so that it makes sense to take it a second time has to be made by the person who is responsible for the module. You cannot generally assume that is it sufficient to work on a presentation for a different topic.

In any case your certificates (“Scheine”) have to mention your presentation topic so that the examinations office can verify that you took two separate seminar modules.
